The first virtual MID Congress was a great success

Due to the current circumstances, the 14th International MID Congress was held virtually. For this purpose the whole schedule was changed in order to be able to integrate this additional meeting well into the usual daily routine.

For many years now, the MID Congress has also included the MID Award. This prize is awarded to individuals who have significantly advanced MID technology through their work and commitment. This year, the €1,000 prize was awarded to the former managing director of the Research Association 3-D MID, Dr.-Ing. Thomas Kuhn. Decisive for the award was his doctorate last year with the topic “Quality and Reliability of Laser Direct Structured Mechatronic Integrated Devices (LDS-MID)” in which he also gave an insight to the participants in a short presentation. The award was presented during the opening session by Prof. Joerg Franke.

Due to the virtual, integrated solution, the 34 lectures could be presented to 91 international participants and thus news from the industry, but also the latest status from our research projects could be shared.

Among other things, two sessions dealt with innovative research on 3D optoelectronics by the Optaver research group of the DFG. The participants were shown ways to additively manufacture optical fibers and couplers and to simulate them.

As part of the cooperation with the IEEE, thirteen papers will again be published as scientific contributions via their database www.IEEExplore.ieee.org. Among the thirteen papers, the contribution of Mr. Ejvind Olsen and Prof. Ludger Overmeyer from Leibniz Universität Hannover – Institute for Transport and Automation Technology (ITA) was awarded the “Best Paper Award”. The award, which comes with €500 in prize money, was presented virtually by Prof. Jörg Franke during the closing session.

Nine of our members presented themselves in the accompanying industrial exhibition. This part of the congress was also very well received and gave the participants an insight into the latest developments and products of the companies as well as exclusive views into the laboratories of the research institutions.
